Reducing Single Use Plastic
Bramley was founded at a time when single use plastic was the norm. In 2009, our founder Chloë, was looking for bath and body products for guests to use when staying at her husbands pub in rural Wiltshire. She couldn’t find options that were made without single use plastic which felt incredibly wasteful, even just for the handful of rooms at the pub. So, she set out to develop her own - blending naturally fragranced toiletries, that importantly, were refillable. This approach continues through Bramley today, where we aim to reduced plastic throughout the whole supply chain.
Here are our top tips on reducing plastic in your business:
Switch to Refillables
Moving to refillable dispensers for bathroom products drastically reduces single-use plastic - particularly if you are refilling into glass bottles, you can almost eliminate the need for any plastic. It can also be a much more cost-effective route as you are able to buy in bulk and top up dispensers as needed. They can be mounted on bathroom walls which also means less products wind up in guests suitcases!
Move to Soap Bars
Consider using solid rather than liquid soaps, shampoos, conditioners or body washes. Solid soap bars usually have very little packaging, and only need a reusable soap dish to conatin them, which significantly cuts down on plastic waste.
Amenities by Request
There are a whole host of welcome little touches you can offer guests to make their stay more comfortable, from pillow sprays to ear plugs. But rather than offering a full range of extras within the room, you could try offering them by request instead so they can pick and choose what is suited to their needs, but they don’t end up wasted if not required.
Plastic Alternatives
Take the time to ensure your amenities are sourced sustainably. There are many other options to avoid those reliant on plastic - look for options made out of biodegradable materials such as bamboo and cornstarch and packaged in paper or card packaging.
Don’t underestimate the difference it can all make. In offering refillable options, we’ve saved 28 tonnes of plastic to date, so it really does add up.
